FAQs

Do I have to live in Marlow to join My Social Action?

No, the project is for anyone who lives in Bucks and/or attends school or works in Marlow or the surrounding area. If you can get to Marlow Youth and Community Centre on Thursday evenings (6.30-8.30pm), you’re welcome to join the group!

Do I have to come every week?

No, we get that you might have other commitments and may not be able to join us every week. But if you’re not going to be able to make it for a few weeks in a row, please let us know.

What kind of social action projects will we work on?

That’ll be up to you! With the other young people, you’ll get to pick what you want to work on and choose how you’re going to go about making a difference. Our Youth Workers will be there to give help where it’s needed, but the decisions will be yours.

For example, as a group you might want to focus on fundraising, volunteering or campaigning. Perhaps you’ll agree to run a community arts or environmental project, organise an event to raise money for a local charity, help at a food bank, or contact policy- makers about an issue you really care about.

Can I use the hours to count towards my Duke of Edinburgh Award?

Yes, absolutely – our staff have been assessors for lots of young people doing the volunteering section of the award in the past. Please let staff know the first time you come along that you’re taking part in the award scheme.

Can I just turn up?

Yes, we welcome new people all year. All we ask is that you, or your parent/carer fill in our online registration form before you come for the first time, so we have your emergency contact details, etc.

I’m nervous about coming to a group where I don’t know anyone – can you help?

Yes! It’s completely normal to be a bit anxious about joining a group of people you’ve never met before. Just let us know in an email that you’re feeling nervous and we’ll do our best to help you feel comfortable. For example, we can arrange for one of our Youth Workers to phone you or meet up with you in person to reassure you before you come. One of us can also greet you at the door when you arrive for your first Thursday evening session so you don’t have to walk in alone. Email: [email protected]
